CARTERET COUNTY OFFERS FREE DRIVE-THRU RABIES VACCINATIONS FOR PETS

April 30, 2026 by Town Clerk

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (April 27, 2026) – Carteret County Animal Control Services will host a free rabies vaccination clinic for pets on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or while supplies last, in the parking lot of the Carteret County Health Department, 3820 Bridges St., Morehead City. The drive-thru clinic will allow pets to remain in vehicles. The event is open to Carteret County residents.

Clinic guidelines:

  • Do not attend if you or your pets are sick.
  • Limit of three pets per family.
  • Pets must be under control at all times and either caged or on a leash no longer than six feet. Cats and ferrets must be in carriers.
  • Follow all signage and staff instructions.

North Carolina law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets over four months of age to be vaccinated against rabies. After the initial vaccination, pets should receive a booster one year later, followed by vaccinations every three years.

Vaccination is the best way to keep our community and our pets safe. By keeping your pets up-to-date on their shots, you provide a circle of protection for your family and your neighbors. Even if a vaccinated pet encounters wildlife, they stay protected and healthy.

All animal bites, whether from domestic animals or wildlife, should be reported to Carteret County Animal Control Services at 252-728-8585, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours, weekends, and holidays, call 252-726-1911 for guidance on potential rabies exposure.

For more information about rabies prevention, visit www.cdc.gov/rabies.

UPDATE FROM NORTH CAROLINA FOREST SERVICE

April 28, 2026 by Town Clerk

Weekend rain not enough to alleviate drought and wildfire impact, statewide burn ban remains in effect
RALEIGH – The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite
weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits
from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain
or more.
“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered
little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near
enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler.
“Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out
from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain
and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is
the best option right now.”
While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry
surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For
Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more
available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have
helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term
issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend
alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until
drought conditions improve.
Since the statewide burn ban was first enacted March 28, the N.C. Forest Service
has responded to more than 1,200 wildfires, burning nearly 3,500 acres. Only five
of those wildfires were determined to be the result of lightning strikes. Since the
state’s burn ban took effect, 287 citations have been issued for illegal burning
with several fires currently pending law enforcement investigation and action.
The public is urged to abide by the burn ban and to use extreme caution with
equipment, machines, mowers, vehicles on dry grass, smoking materials such as
cigarettes, anything that can throw a spark. Many of these causes have resulted in
several large wildfires in recent weeks throughout the state. While not classified
as open burning and not affected by the state’s ban on open burning, they are still
contributors to new fire starts across the state.
During a state-issued burn ban, the same N.C. Forest Service personnel providing
initial and extended attack for wildfire response are providing the necessary
enforcement action to support the ban on open burning. Reducing the number of
new ignitions is critical for sustaining adequate resource availability for an
extended period, making state-issued bans a necessary tool for keeping wildfires
contained and as small as possible until fully extinguished.
As the statewide ban on open burning and high fire danger continues, the public
can stay informed and prepared to prevent wildfires. The fire danger map and fire
danger statements are public-facing tools to help warn of increased wildfire risk
due to current and forecast weather conditions. To see fire danger in your area,
use the fire danger map and fire danger statements, both available online.

Carteret County Emergency Services Medically Fragile Program

April 27, 2026 by Town Clerk

Medically Fragile Registration

The Medically Fragile Registry is a database containing information about individuals in Carteret County with special needs who may require assistance in the event of a disaster. People with special medical needs include individuals who would need assistance with medical assistance with medical or personal care during evacuations and sheltering because of physical or mental impairments. The level of care for these individuals would go beyond the basic first aid care that is available in general public shelters.

Purpose

The Medically Fragile Registry is an emergency preparedness tool that can be used by Carteret County for communicating with medically fragile individuals, pre-event emergency planning, and for evacuating and sheltering during a disaster.

  • Participation in the registry is voluntary, and all information will be kept private and confidential.
  • Individuals on the registry can decide to request assistance and/or remain responsible for themselves in the event of a disaster.
  • Even though you are on this registry, you should still call 911 in the event of a life-threatening situation.

In the event of a disaster

If there is a disaster, the Medically Fragile registrant can call the Carteret County Medically Fragile Command Center at 252-222-5841 and receive information about how to prepare for or respond to the disaster and information regarding medical shelters. Please note that the Medically Fragile Command Center is only staffed in the event of a disaster. An announcement will be made to the public via the media. Depending on the event, individuals on the registry can be called to check on their well-being.

Assisting Emergency Personnel

The information can also be used to assist emergency personnel in providing assistance. In addition, Medically Fragile registrants are included in Carteret County’s CodeRED emergency telephone notification system, which can be activated if there is an immediate need to make contact.

Eligibility Information

Eligible applicants may:

  • Need assistance that cannot be provided by general public shelter staff
  • Have minor health or medical conditions that require observation and/or help
  • Need minimal help with activities of daily living
  • Need medication and vital sign monitoring
  • Have mental health or developmental problems

If you are not sure whether you meet these requirements you are encouraged to register. Do not wait until an evacuation to request being added to the registry.

Assisted Living Facilities

Residents of assisted living facilities or nursing homes are not eligible. These facilities are required to have emergency evacuation plans for their residents.

Registration

To register with Carteret County, please access the Medically Fragile Registry Form. Complete all sections of this application and return or mail. If more than one person in your household needs assistance during evacuations, each person must complete a separate application.

Notification & Recertification

You will be notified by the Carteret County Emergency Management Office after you submit the application. You will be contacted on an annual basis to recertify your need for this program. It is your responsibility to update your contact information with the Carteret County Emergency Management Office. If we are unable to contact you, you will be removed from the registry.
