I wanted to contact the town council about the the many concerns with the upcoming meeting about pending 24 bypass. This project will be bad for Bogue! The traffic will unnecessarily increase for the small area. The bypass will caught through the Croatan National forest causing the very fire prone area to not be able to be managed properly through prescribed burns. This will increase the fuel loading of the forest which will in turn greatly increase our wildfire risk to the community. Homes adjacent to the National Forest will likely see greater insurance rates and will be at risk of slowed response if a fire occurs. This not to include the fact that area of the forest is home to great hunting opportunities for the community that will be decreased greatly. That area of the forest is also home to the most north population of the rare and threatened Venus flytraps. There also a large a population of federally endangered bird species called the red cockaded woodpecker RCW. When the DOT put a bypass around havelock they caused harm to RCW habitat and this lead to them being sued by environmental groups. They had to pay them millions of dollars of our tax dollars to settle in court. I know on good authority that this area I much more sensitive habitat for these birds and that it will cost the taxpayers millions of dollars when DOT gets sued. There are many issues with this bypass being put into the Bogue community. Please tell DOT that this project won’t be good here and they need a better plan!
Good Morning, Cole,
Thank you for your email. The Town Council will meet Monday, November 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Town Hall, 121 Chimney Branch Road.
We encourage you to attend the meeting and take part in the public comment period. Your email will be included in the agenda packet
as well. The NCDOT was here at the October Town Council meeting and gave a detailed presentation. The NCDOT has been to Cape Carteret
and most of the other municipalities within Carteret County where the Comprehensive Transportation Plan has been adopted.
We look forward to seeing you at the November meeting.
Respectfully,
Barbara Owens
Town Clerk
Town of Bogue
